It’s said that talent isn’t innate but it’s also true that the zest for pursuing a dream is inherent. Baloo’s journey showcases a very cliched version of walking on fire to pave the path to a successful life. While the story is similar to Lagaan in many respects, it’s the illustrations that worked well for me. Honestly, I found the writing, more so the font used (with its sharp, angular lines and exaggerated serifs, the font feels harsh and aggressive, making it uncomfortable to look at for extended periods), a little discomforting (owing to the verbose narrative yet the story is an inspirational one- one that is sure to make young children do a double take on their choices and plan of action.
Merging the themes of class disparity, class stratification and the underprivileged reeling under the whirlpool of comments passed by the judgemental society, the author deftly brings forth the importance of perseverance and patience. In his quest to discover his real potential, Baloo forms the pivot of the story. Right from practising cricket with his friends to playing for the Home Indian Team against the Englishmen, he climbs the ladder to evoke respect and pride. But haven’t we all heard of this kind of progression? That’s what just didn’t fit right.
Nevertheless, the young kids are going to love Baloo’s adventure. So, go for it!
