How to Become Rich
Author: Devdutt Pattanaik
Publisher: Rupa Publishers
Rating: 3/5
Devdutt Pattanaik is known for his simple yet pragmatic approach towards mythology. His derivations and logical explanations have often amazed me! In his new book ‘How to Become Rich’, he deciphers the role of Vedic scriptures in helping us understand the management of finances. Learning from the stories of Ganesha, Kubera, Hanuman, Brahma, Vishnu and several other prominent characters of mythology, the author gleans information and strategies and encourages the readers to use those methods for efficient management of money.
‘How to Become Rich’ is more like a self-help book that procures its basis from the wisdom of those who gave us sacred Vedic scriptures and Puranas. The only problem with this is that in the present world, where time and knowledge are non-renewable resources, these lessons from the ancient texts seem less feasible. The application of these ideas is subjective. But at the same time, there is no harm in becoming aware. The way the author presents the stories, touching upon only the essential elements and events, is commendable. This acts as a boon for the ones like me who avoid mythology as it is humdrum.
‘How to Become Rich’ stresses the importance of dividing the money into corrects portions- the part that needs to be saved, the part to be used for one’s needs and the part that is to be used to fulfil one’s wants. Once this criterion is clear, it will become easier to maintain an account and get into the habit of developing and following a budget-friendly expense chart. The book offers a basic understanding of the fact that money is like seed and it can only increase when the seed is sown and nurtured with patience and dexterity to make the right decisions.
Overall, this is yet another book that offers food for thought. Go ahead and buy this one if you are interested in knowing the secret of saving money using the teachings of some of the wisest!
Best wishes to the author!
