Krishna’s death has been a bone of contention for many. The story about Jara, a hunter, mistakenly assuming Krishna’s moving foot for a deer and shooting an arrow at it is quite well-known. But Meghnad Desai offers a simpler yet easily palpable version of the ending. When given a chance to be playful and fanciful with the element of ‘maya’ in Mahabharat, the author grabs it by the horns and ensures the closure for the epic is satisfying.
Mayabharata is the story of the pivotal character whose whereabouts were always questioned when his kingdom was reeling under the impact of war. Krishna’s death forms the crux of the plot and whatever was around him form the stepping stones to the eventual outcome. We get a peek into the emergence of Raja Maya and how he came to enlighten Krishna about the latter’s indulgence in prejudice.
Mayabharata is seamless in its execution but it is too simple to be believable. The plot and the mapping of events seem to be an aftereffect of rigorous reading and top-rated research yet the narrative might leave some with unquenched curiosity.
Best wishes to the author!
