Book Review: Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid by Jeff Kinney
Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid
Author: Jeff Kinney
Genre: Children’s book
Publisher: Puffin Publishers
We all know the ‘Wimpy Kid’. Jeff Kinney’s Greg is such a fabulous and famous character. We have despised him for his mannerisms, we have loved him for his honesty and we have laughed with him in his misadventures. But who would have thought of a spin-off? A story that is narrated from Rowley’s perspective? ‘Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid’ will be a roller coaster ride for the young readers as they will be caught unawares when Rowley describes his set of misadventures. The best part of his journal entry is that Greg finds the place almost everywhere and the journal entry often takes us back to the time when we read Greg’s journal.
The author’s prowess lies in understanding the two different perspectives and forming a narrative that binds our interest. Rowley is a friendly kid who adores his family and wants to follow the right path. His best friend, Greg, often tries to convince him to fall into trouble. Nevertheless, the friendship between these two pals grows stronger day-by-day. It is hilarious how Rowley starts off by mentioning that this book is going to be about him and then on every page, Greg’s name appears. Rowley and Greg, although poles apart, stick together always.
This book is backed by illustrations using stick figures. It is fun to read about the mishaps and how these two lads cover up for their mistakes. Greg’s comebacks are awesome. And so is Rowley’s persistence to vouch for what is right!
Jeff Kinney has presented yet another hit. This book will be liked by children between the age of 7-13 years.
Best wishes to the author!
