Whenever the peace of the world is at stake, all hopes rely on the United Nations Security Council for their timely intervention and strategic solutions. Knowing what mettle is required to take control and make such decisions, it isn’t surprising that only a few nations qualify to become a member of this Security Council. With the main focus being the maintenance of international peace and security, the dominating nations of the world like United States, United Kingdom, Franc, Russia and China decide on common council policies and decisions that other non-permanent members also comply with.
‘Legitimacy to Power’ is a quick guide that offers information from the establishment of the UN to its improvisation and functioning. Drawing from his experience, the author, who has had his share of experiences working as the former head of India’s UN affairs, intelligently presents details that help in understanding the structure and hierarchy of the UN. Over the years, the Security Council has evolved. However, the author verbalizes his concern very clearly. The permanent five members, their decisions and conflicts and the veto power- all these factors might end up making the legitimacy of UN questionable.
Right from the conception of the idea to the aftermath of Korean Operation, the author grabs the opportunity by its horns and explains each and every aspect of this organization- connecting dots and drawing lines- highlighting the relevance of historical events and mentioning about the transformation of the policies according to the need of the hour. Though a little monotonous because it has many dates and events, this book will prove out to be enjoyable if read with an intention to know more about the organization that takes charge when world peace is a matter of concern.
Overall, this is an interesting book but has a selected target audience.
Best Wishes to the author!
