Using irony throughout the narrative, The Violence in Our Bones pierces through our conscience as the author manages to navigate through the various heinous crimes that take place every minute of our existence in various parts of our country. However much we deny their plausibility or refrain from discussing these issues, we cannot run away from how these actions define the image of our nation.

Bold, explosive yet true to the core, The Violence in Our Bones explores the intentions behind various crimes that take place in our country. Often such crimes are kept under the wraps by influential people and are not put out before the public. Often many crimes are committed by the common folk in the name of religion and caste. Whether it is the discrimination meted out to the Dalits or the silent anti-muslim movement that has seeped into every corner of the nation, we have not left any stone unturned in proving that there is violence in our bones. It is surprising why our country is still believed to be a non-violent country! Public lynching, rapes, murders, slander, arrests for utilizing the ‘freedom of speech’ and illegal acquisition of tribal lands are all examples of violence that resides inside our being. As long as we do not speak about it, we harbour it and play the host.

Well-researched and deftly expressed, the views of the author are not only balanced but unbiased too. Her intention to make the readers introspect is commendable. The writing style is easy yet leaves an impact on the mind.

Overall, The Violence in Our Bones gives an opportunity to the readers to look at the mirror and see their violent streak staring right back at them. It questions our existence and the name given to our land because of Gandhi and Ashoka. It will take a strong heart and an open mind to devour this reflective account.
