#Review: A Human History of Emotions by Richard F.
A Human History of Emotions Author: Richard Firth-Godbehere Publisher: Harper Collins, India Rating: 5/5
This was one of the most anticipated reads of 2022 for me as I had always found the psychology behind emotions and reactions intriguing. A Human History of Emotions is comprehensive and requires patience and an open mind to delve deeper into the study of emotions. Emotions are not merely feelings; they are governed by biological as well as evolutionary origin. Like how we are conditioned into responding a certain way to certain stimuli, our reactions are also a result of our culture and evolution. Our responses are not generic, for every culture has a different way, a different response. That’s why it is all the more interesting to read about how emotions or feelings led to the creation of cities/ towns/ continents and even caused colossal damage to the world at large. These emotions contributed to waging wars and resolving conflicts alike. But like I mentioned, there’s enough historical evidence to support this claim that emotions are not generic but are a product of our surroundings.
The book aims at offering a new perspective for emotions. They are more complex, a result of several ever-changing situations and a consequence of how the brain processes the information/ stimulus that keeps the nerve cells on their toes! It comprises a lot of historical references and eventually proves how emotions have a solid history. It shows the evolution of the human mindset and its notions about feelings and emotions.
A Human History of Emotions lays the foundation for more research about this subject. Hence, this book, because of how well-researched and well-articulated it is, should be read by everyone who is keenly interested in psychology.
Best wishes to the author!
