#Review: Dharma Yoga by Ravi Swaminathan and Ananth

Dharma Yoga: The Hindu Code and Way of Life
Author: Ravi Swaminathan and Ananth
Publisher: Rupa Publications
Rating: 3/5

Dharma Yoga: The Hindu Code and Way of Life reads like a blueprint for living rather than a book you casually dip into.

What stands out immediately is its highly structured approach. The division into Prayojanas and Maryadas gives it a systematic, almost curriculum-like feel—as if Hindu philosophy has been broken down into life modules. For readers who appreciate clarity and step-by-step frameworks, this works in its favour, making complex ideas feel accessible and organised.

At the same time, this structure also makes the book feel somewhat rigid. Unlike more reflective or interpretative works, it leans toward prescribing a way of life—telling you what to do, how to think, and how to align yourself with Dharma. There’s a sense of certainty throughout, which may appeal to some readers but might feel restrictive to others seeking nuance or debate.

The book does a commendable job of explaining key concepts like Dharma, Karma, Moksha, and Purushartha in a way that connects with modern life. It clearly aims to bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary living, offering practical takeaways rather than abstract philosophy.

However, the lack of space for questioning or multiple perspectives slightly limits its depth. Hindu philosophy, by nature, thrives on plurality and interpretation, and that richness feels somewhat streamlined here.

Overall, it works well as a structured guide or introduction, but less so as a space for deep reflection or philosophical exploration.
