#Review: A Pallava Adventure by Preetha Leela Chockalingam

A Pallava Adventure
Author: Preetha Leela Chockalingam
Publisher: Penguinsters

I picked up A Pallava Adventure expecting a light historical read, but it turned out to be much more engaging than I had anticipated. What I appreciated most was how the author brought the Pallava era to life without making it feel like a history lesson. The storytelling has an easy rhythm, and I found myself moving from one chapter to the next quite effortlessly, much like following a well-guided walk through an ancient city.

The characters feel believable, and their adventures naturally introduce readers to the culture, architecture, and values of the time. Rather than overwhelming the reader with historical details, the book weaves them into the narrative in a way that keeps the curiosity alive. That balance is not always easy to achieve, but it works well here.

The black-and-white illustrations are a lovely addition. They appear at just the right moments, offering a visual pause and helping readers imagine the setting more vividly. I especially think younger readers will enjoy these touches, as they make the story feel more immersive.

Overall, Pallava Adventure is an enjoyable blend of history and fiction that manages to educate without ever feeling preachy. By the time I reached the final page, I felt as though I had travelled back in time and returned with a deeper appreciation for a fascinating period of Indian history. It is the kind of book I would happily recommend to middle-grade readers, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking for an entertaining story with substance.
