#Review: ABC of Sikhism for Kids by Maya Dalal

ABC of Sikhism for Kids is a lovely little introduction to Sikhism, especially for children who are encountering its history, traditions and ideas for the first time. The book uses the familiar structure of the alphabet—A for Adi Granth, B for Baisakhi, C for Charan Amrit and so on—to gradually introduce everything from the Gurus and Gurbani to concepts such as Seva, Langar and equality.

What works particularly well is the way the book moves beyond simply naming religious terms. The short explanations give children a sense of why these ideas matter, while the illustrations by Arpana Caur add colour and personality to what could otherwise have felt like a glossary.

The writing is simple and informative, although some of the concepts are naturally better suited to being explored with a parent or teacher rather than read completely independently. I actually see that as part of its charm because it gives adults plenty of opportunities to pause and talk.

The book’s biggest strength is its emphasis on values—equality, compassion, honest living, community and selfless service—rather than presenting Sikhism merely as a collection of rituals.

A warm, colourful and thoughtfully put-together book that makes a good starting point for curious young readers.
