#Review: An Angelic Folly by Peter Prizel
An Angelic Folly
Author: Peter Prizel
Publisher: Self-published
Rating: 3.5/5
Peter Prizel’s An Angelic Folly is an introspective and deeply philosophical novel that blends literary storytelling with existential musings. The narrative follows Jacob, a hospice worker and social work intern, as he navigates his final days at a hospice facility, forming a poignant bond with an elderly patient, Tony. Through their conversations, the novel delves into themes of mortality, redemption, and identity, all while balancing the mundane and the metaphysical.
Prizel’s writing style is fluid and often poetic, weaving realism with a reflective, almost spiritual tone. The dialogue between Jacob and Tony is particularly compelling, capturing the raw honesty of end-of-life conversations while maintaining a natural, conversational rhythm. There is a careful interplay between clinical observation and personal introspection, making the narrative feel grounded and philosophical. The novel also incorporates religious allegories, particularly in its portrayal of the angel Gabriel and the recurring motif of Mozart’s Requiem, reinforcing the themes of unfinished business and acceptance.
The novel’s greatest strength lies in its character development. Tony is a fascinating figure—his musings on life, his regrets, and his humour make him feel incredibly real. Jacob’s internal struggles, from his recent divorce to his anxieties as a father, add further layers to the narrative, making it more than just a hospice story. The depiction of the hospice setting is vivid and immersive, evoking a melancholic yet dignified atmosphere. Prizel also excels in creating a strong sense of place, from the stark realities of New York’s streets to the quiet solitude of Jacob’s apartment, further emphasizing the novel’s themes of transition and impermanence.
However, the novel is not without its flaws. The pacing can be uneven, particularly when it veers into dense theological or philosophical discussions that, while thought-provoking, sometimes slow down the narrative. Some metaphors, especially those related to religious symbolism, feel overextended, making certain passages more abstract than necessary. Additionally, the shifts between the real and the metaphysical are not always seamless, which can momentarily break the immersion.
Despite these minor shortcomings, An Angelic Folly is a beautifully contemplative read that will resonate with those who appreciate literary fiction with emotional and philosophical depth. Its exploration of life, death, and human connection lingers long after the final page.
