Language is the garment of the soul and the words that constitute the language play a very important in leaving a lasting impression. Unless we understand the importance of speaking right at the right time to the right person, we cannot claim that we can communicate effectively. ‘The Dos and Don’ts of Communication in Difficult Times’ is a self-help book that outlines the points that can help the readers become a better conversationalist.
This book highlights how tone, gestures, colloquialism and often actions might offend the listener. Right from saying ‘No’, bullying, making excuses, using flattery as a means to get work done to criticizing, offering unwanted suggestions, nitpicking flaws and getting into ‘avoidable’ arguments- the author discusses the cons in detail. I liked how he pointed out the aftermath of interfering, interjecting, interrupting. In the second part of the book, he explains the importance of ignoring the trivial issues, moving past the urge to win every argument, using a politer tone even when angry, acknowledging, appreciating and praising the speaker and using questions to convey your ideas. Using these simple and known techniques, one can easily polish communication skills and be able to engage in a healthy conversation.
Sadly, the book is a short read and seems to be just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many other aspects of language and communication that need to be kept in mind while having a conversation. I really hoped that the book delved deeper into the importance of good communication because it is the need of the hour.
Overall, this book is a very quick read (I finished it in 30 minutes) and that’s why it can be picked up during the lockdown period.
Best wishes to the author!
