Where Demons Reside
Author: Kara Macris
Publisher: Self-published
Rating: 4/5

What an absolute pleasure I had of reading this ARC provided by dearest Kara!

Kara Macris ‘Where Demons Reside offers an unfathomable ride—a ride that promises a blend of supernatural forces with human struggles, presenting a fresh take on the concept of exorcism. At the heart of the story is Thomas Walker, a hesitant teenager who has been compelled into the role of a demon exorcist. He grapples not only with otherworldly entities but also with his insecurities, making him a protagonist many can relate to despite the fantastical setting.

The story opens with a gripping prologue, immersing readers amid Thomas’ panic attack in a bathroom stall. A mysterious figure offers him a calming mantra, introducing an enigmatic character who recurs throughout the novel. This encounter sets the tone for Thomas’ inner conflict: a struggle to reconcile his humanity with his newfound supernatural duties. Macris deftly illustrates Thomas’ anxieties, making his fear palpable and relatable, even as the narrative ventures into the realm of magic and demons.

As the narrative progresses, Thomas faces his first exorcism. The ritual is depicted with vivid detail and intensity, from the unsettling ambience of the church to the grotesque depiction of the demon. Thomas’ hesitation and self-doubt add layers to the story, highlighting that not all heroes are eager or prepared for their destinies. The presence of other Principalities—seasoned exorcists who assist and critique Thomas—further complicates his journey, as their differing perspectives on exorcism and mercy shape his understanding of what it means to save someone truly.

The moral ambiguity of the exorcisms adds depth to the plot. A dissenting young Principality argues that demons can be saved without exorcism, hinting at a more humane solution to a problem traditionally met with violence. This debate injects a philosophical dimension into the story, prompting readers to question the true nature of demons and the ethics behind exorcisms.

Macris’ writing is atmospheric and immersive, capturing the eerie, almost claustrophobic environment of the church and the intensity of Thomas’ inner turmoil. The use of sacred artefacts, chants, and divine light serves to create a unique lore that feels well-developed and integral to the world-building. However, the novel’s pacing occasionally falters during more dialogue-heavy scenes, which can slow the momentum. Yet, these moments also offer character development and moral exploration, providing balance to the action-driven parts.

Overall, ‘Where Demons Reside’ stands out as a compelling dark fantasy novel that explores themes of identity, fear, and morality. It invites readers to empathize with a young boy who never sought out his supernatural role but must learn to navigate it regardless. Kara Macris crafts a story where exorcism is not just a battle against evil but a test of character, challenging readers to see beyond black-and-white definitions of good and evil. Go for it!
