#Review: A to Z of Indian History by Archana Garodia and Shruti Garodia
A to Z of Indian History
Author: Archana Garodia Gupta, Shruti Garodia
Publisher: Penguinsters
History rarely feels this playful, and that’s exactly what makes this book such a refreshing read. A to Z of Indian History turns what could have been a dense subject into something lively, accessible, and genuinely enjoyable.
The format itself is a win. Moving alphabetically from one concept to another, the book offers bite-sized narratives that are easy to pick up and hard to put down. What stands out immediately is the vibrant presentation. The pages are richly coloured, filled with illustrations, fun fact boxes, and thoughtfully designed layouts that keep the reader visually engaged. It does not feel like a textbook at all, and that is its biggest strength.
The content balances trivia with substance. Facts like muslin fitting into a snuffbox or multiple versions of the Ramayana spark curiosity, while topics like Ashokan pillars and Ellora are explained with clarity and context. It invites the reader to explore rather than just absorb.
That said, the brevity can sometimes feel limiting. Just when a topic becomes interesting, it moves on, leaving you wanting a little more depth. But perhaps that is also the intention—to spark interest rather than exhaust it.
Overall, this is a charming, well-illustrated introduction to Indian history. Perfect for curious minds, and even better for anyone who thought history was boring.
