#Review: Champak Books by Penguinsters

The Greatest Bedtime Stories & Stories That Celebrate India

Author: Champak

Publisher: Penguinsters

These two books together feel like a neat little duo—one meant for winding down at night, the other for gently opening up a child’s world a bit wider. If one is your cosy bedtime routine, the other is your casual “let’s learn something without realising it” companion.

What immediately stands out in both is the illustration work. Bright, expressive, and full of life, the visuals almost take over the storytelling—in a good way. Whether it’s animals in playful scenarios or everyday Indian settings like streets, schools, and festivals, the artwork keeps things engaging without overwhelming the page. For young readers, this is exactly what holds attention.

The language across both books is simple, clean, and very readable. Perfect for read-aloud sessions or for children just beginning to read independently. There’s a smoothness to the flow—no complicated structures, no heavy vocabulary—which makes the reading experience easy and comforting. That said, it does occasionally feel a little too safe. Some stories follow predictable patterns, and the outcomes aren’t always surprising.

Where they differ is in intent. The Greatest Bedtime Stories leans into comfort—short, gentle tales that are easy to pick up and put down, ideal for sleepy evenings. Stories That Celebrate India, on the other hand, brings in elements of culture, history, and values. It introduces ideas such as friendship, responsibility, and national identity in an approachable way, though at times the moral undertone feels slightly obvious.

Together, they balance each other out quite well. One soothes, the other sparks curiosity. Neither tries too hard, and that’s probably their biggest strength—they stay within their lane and do what they’re meant to do.

Not extraordinary, but definitely dependable—and sometimes, that’s exactly what you want on a child’s bookshelf.
