Some books about adolescence try too hard to sound like teenagers. Uma Kapoor vs The Universe doesn’t. It simply is one.

Told through the witty, self-deprecating voice of twelve-year-old Uma, the story begins with a house fire, a first period, and a family quietly falling apart. While her once-efficient mother struggles after the traumatic incident and her father desperately tries to keep the peace, Uma finds herself navigating school, friendships, embarrassing crushes, changing bodies, and the overwhelming feeling that the universe has personally declared war on her.

What impressed me most was the authenticity of Uma’s narration. Her inner monologues are hilarious, dramatic, awkward, and painfully relatable—the perfect reflection of a pre-teen trying to make sense of a world that suddenly feels far more complicated than it used to. The humour lands effortlessly, but beneath every laugh lies a quiet ache about growing up, anxiety, and watching your parents become vulnerable.

The supporting cast adds warmth and personality, especially Arjun, whose friendship provides both comic relief and emotional grounding. The family dynamics are written with remarkable sensitivity, portraying mental health, grief, and resilience without becoming heavy-handed or preachy.

Vinitha’s writing is simple yet engaging, sprinkled with clever chapter titles, doodles, and lists that make the reading experience even more immersive. The pacing occasionally slows in the middle, but Uma’s distinctive voice keeps the pages turning.

Heartfelt, funny, and deeply compassionate, Uma Kapoor vs The Universe captures the messy beauty of adolescence with honesty and charm. It’s a wonderful middle-grade novel that reminds readers, young and old, that growing up rarely comes with neat answers, only the courage to keep asking questions.
