If you have watched Raja, Rasoi Aur Anya Kahaniyaan on Netflix and enjoyed every ounce of information that is shared in that television series, you are sure to enjoy Bhog Naivedya. Bhog Naivedya is a comprehensive account of food offerings made to various deities that are worshipped throughout the length and breadth of our country. Knowing that India is a land of diverse cultures, it wouldn’t be wrong to expect a different form of devotion in different parts of this holy land. Bhog Naivedya has been divided into various chapters where each chapter highlights the process and the type of food that is offered to the deity and also discusses the origin of the practice.
Right from the ingredients that form the main food, the book also discusses the prasad offerings and certain other rituals that accompany the process of offering. It is interesting to note how in some temples the food offering is accompanied by the singing of songs. Some temples also ensure that the food is offered in certain types of utensils like clay chulhis. Bhog Naivedya traces the multi-cultural treasure of our country that offers a diverse range of food preparations and engrossing tales behind their serving. Who knew that the stories behind each food offering could be collated together to form a food web of their own!
Overall, Bhog Naivedya is a meticulously researched work that promises insightful information that might add flavour to the idea of devotion! The narrative is interspersed with folktales and beliefs that are carried forward over the years. This is definitely a recommended read!
Best wishes to the author!
