Book Review: Sick of Being Healthy by Monisha B. Gumber
Sick of Being Healthy
Author: Monisha K. Gumber
Publisher: Leadstart Publishers
Rating: 3.5/5
It is said that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder and thus, it is imperative for us that we realize our self-worth and accept ourselves as we are. Based on the same concept, Monisha Gumber’s book Sick of Being Healthy is a quirky story of a teenage girl, Tara. Tara is like you and me; she wants to look hot, get the attention of the boys in her class, become famous and what not! Like every other teenager, Tara makes some impulsive decisions owing to peer pressure and the unawareness about certain things. Yet when she is acknowledged in her school, her mind comes back on the right track. This story is about self-love and how important that is for each one of us. Sick of Being Healthy also discusses the standards that the society has set and the audacity it takes to take a stand and not follow the blind alleyway.
Tara Kapoor is a teenager who is healthy, conscious and a victim of inferiority complex, for her friends Dolly and Megha are sexy and intelligent, respectively. Tara’s insecurities increase when her crush chooses to go out with her friend. Lo and behold, we see Tara getting worked up so much so that she decides to do a crash-dieting course and attain an ideal body within three months. The story exposes us to the reality of those crash diet courses and how they are so unhealthy in the long run. Tara’s story also makes us realize that the teenage years are not easy. While the hormones are going wild and are uncontrollable, the teenagers have the pressure of coping with their parents’ expectations and thinking before leaping in any direction.
Humourous narrative, realistic setting and genuine sincerity are some of the qualities that caught my attention. I liked Tara’s soliloquies and her animated reactions. The illustrations acted like the icing on the cake. Just a few typos here and there can definitely be ignored. Overall, this is an enjoyable story that deserves to be read!
Best wishes to the author!
